Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Utterance-Inspirational
1 Corinthians 12:10
10 to another prophecy...to another various kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:10-11
to another prophecy
1 Corinthians 14:3
But the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and consolation
Many people think the gift of prophecy is prediction. The simple gift of prophecy is not prediction but is speaking unto men to edify (build up), exhort (urge, challenge), and to comfort.
The gift of prophecy is given to edify the Church through exhortation-calling nearer to God or an invitation. Prophecy can include various warnings that are not necessarily fortelling. Prophecy is not fault finding, however prophecy may cause conviction of sin.
Prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known tongue. The Greek word that is translated "prophecy" means to speak for another. So, "prophecy" can be mean can mean to speak for God or to be a spokesman. The simple gift of prophecy should not be confused with the prophetic office or with the prophetic utterance that may come forth in the prophet's ministry.
Prophesying is more than preaching. Some people think that to prophecy means to preach. "To preach" means to proclaim, to announce, to cry or to tell. Prophecy is a supernatural gift.
The Gift of prophecy vs. the Office of the Prophet
The fact that the gift of simple prophecy operates through a person doesn't make him a prophet. A profit has more of the gifts of the spirit in operation than just the gift of prophecy.
To stand in the office of a prophet, the person must have two of the revelation gifts—word of wisdom and word of knowledge.
For a person standing in the office of the prophet, a person needs to be called to the Five Fold Ministry as a prophet, at times in the role of preacher or teacher.
Differences between Old and New Testament Prophets
In the Old Testament, prophecy was essentially foretelling, in the New Testament the gift of prophecy shifted to forthtelling.
1 Corinthians 12:10
...to another various kinds of tongues
(Various kinds of tongues-NASB, different kinds of tongues-NIV, diverse kinds of tongues-KJV, unknown tongues-NLT, various kinds of [unknown] tongues-AMP)
The gift of various tongues is a supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in languages never learned by the speaker, nor understood by the speaker, not necessarily always understood by the hearer.
Speaking in tongues has nothing whatsoever to do with linguistic ability; it has nothing to do with the mind or the intellect of the man. It is a vocal miracle of the Holy Spirit.
Many believe the gift of tongues found in 1 Corinthians 12 is more of a prophetic gift and tongues found in 1 Corinthians 14 can be a prophetic gift and a devotional gift of tongues.
Purposes of Speaking in Purposes

Speaking with other tongues is talking to God supernaturally it is your spirit by the holy spirit within you, talking to God-1 Corinthians 14:14.
Speaking in tongues can be a form of communion with God and for your own edification.
1 Cor 14:2
For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one [a]understands, but [b]in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Cor 14:4
The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

Do Not Forbid Speaking in Tongues
1 Corinthians 14:39
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly way.
(It should be noted that among those who believe in the Gift of Tongues, there are various perspectives regarding the use of tongues for prophetic purposes, prayer purposes, if initial of Baptism of the Holy Spirit or at times the initial evidence.)
Interpretation means “explanation.” Explanation means “to give the meaning.” We must understand that interpretation does not mean “translation.” Translation means “to say the same thing in another language.” Therefore, interpretation of tongues is giving the meaning of what is said in another language. it is a supernatural gift so someone interpreting a message in tongues who speaks the language that the tongue is spoken in, does not have the supernatural of interpretation of tongues.
Purposes for Interpretation of Tongues
The gift of interpretation is to build up Christ’s body by giving the meaning of what is being spoken in tongues in the public service. The edification comes to the body as the members understand what was spoken in the unknown tongue. In this way they are lifted to new heights of worship, prayer, blessing, or giving of thanks to God. Often when this happens believers find their burdens lifted, their problems solved, their joys increased, and their spiritual lives enriched. The whole church is strengthened as the members unite in this Holy Spirit-inspired reaching unto God.
1 Cor 14:5
Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification.
Speaking in tongues in a public service is in order only when it is interpreted.
1 Cor 14:27
If anyone speaks in a tongue, it must be by two or at the most three, and each one in turn, and one is to interpret.
There may be times when someone gives a message in tongues (to them an unknown language) and they may be given the interpretation.
1 Cor 14:13
Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret.
Have the Supernatural Gifts Ceased?
There are those who are called cessationists that believe the supernatural gifts of the spirit, specifically the gifts of the Holy Sprit found in 1 Corinthians 12, 13, 14, have ceased since 70AD, or the canonization of scripture. There is no scriptural basis for this belief system. We covered this topic in great detail at Spiritual Gifts Ceased.
Cessationists also believe Apostles and Prophets of the Five Fold callling/gifts have also ceased, in spite of Ephesians 4:11-13
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors [shepherds] and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
It is time for the body of Christ within the Walls of the Church,
and the Church Without Walls to unwrap the spiritual gifts.
