Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Revelatory
1 Corinthians 12:8-10
8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits.
1 Corinthians 12:8
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit
The word of wisdom has three main purposes:
To help Christians be aware of something God is doing or about to do.
To prepare for something that is going to happen in the future.
To seek to change a future event through prayer and/or fasting.
Manifestations of the word of wisdom can come through a vocal gift of utterance, through prophecy, through tongues and interpretation, a vision, a dream, or the audible voice of God. Some manifestations are conditional based on obedience.
The word of wisdom is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit concerning the divine purpose and plan in the mind and will of God. It is not a gift based upon being a wise person, there is nothing supernatural about that.
The difference between the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom is the word of knowledge is always present tense. or concerning something that has happened in the past, the word of wisdom always speaks of the future.
1 Corinthians 12:8
and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit
Manifestations of the word of knowledge can come through inward revelation. It can come by the spirit of God speaking to you. It can be manifested through interpretation of tongues, although this is not the usual vehicle. It can manifest through a vision, dream, gift of prophecy.
The word of knowledge is a supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts, that the person being used by the gift would never know. God gives a fragrant part of his entire knowledge. He may reveal something of a person's past or about something currently happening in there life. The gift of knowledge is not a profound knowledge of the Bible.
1 Corinthians 12:10
and to another the distinguishing of spirits.
Distinguishing or discerning of sprits is the discerning of divine, satanic, or human spirits. Distinguishing of spirits can reveal the power, whether good or evil, that may be enforcing a supernatural manifestation or influencing a type of behavior.
Discerning of Spirits is Not:
Discernment, it is the discerning of spirits
It is not the discerning of faults in others
It is not faultfinding
Have the Supernatural Gifts Ceased?
There are those who are called cessationists that believe the supernatural gifts of the spirit, specifically the gifts of the Holy Sprit found in 1 Corinthians 12, 13, 14, have ceased since 70AD, or the canonization of scripture. There is no scriptural basis for this belief system. We covered this topic in great detail at Spiritual Gifts Ceased.
Cessationists also believe Apostles and Prophets of the Five Fold callling/gifts have also ceased, in spite of Ephesians 4:11-13
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors [shepherds] and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
It is time for the body of Christ within the Walls of the Church,
and the Church Without Walls to unwrap the spiritual gifts.
